GLASSNET Preparing for Project Kickoff with First Network-Wide Meeting

The NSF-funded Accelnet project, GLASSNET, is ramping up for their kickoff event, “GLASSNET Week” that will take place May 17, 19, and 21 from 9:00 AM – 11:00 AM EST each day. GLASSNET is a ‘network of networks’, designed to facilitate Systems Integration to Manage Land, Water and Climate Systems in the Anthropocene. GLASSNET emerged from the Purdue University initiative dubbed Global to Local Analysis of System Sustainability (GLASS) project. GLASSNET has strong engagement from the Purdue-based GLASS and GTAP networks.

In preparation for the inaugural event, the team’s Science Committee met virtually on April 7, 2021. Researchers in attendance identified an initial set of working group concepts that will shape the agenda for GLASSNET Week. In addition to economic and ecological systems, land and water systems and data base modeling, the group identified a need for a human capital development and efforts aimed at broadening participation in GLASSNET.

The first hour of GLASSNET week (May 17, 9:00 AM-10:00 AM EST) will provide an overview of GLASSNET’s mission and vision for the next five years and beyond NSF funding. The remainder of the week will be dedicated to working group activities aimed to further define the scope of the project areas and lay the groundwork for a summer workshop series. GLASSNET will host four monthly workshops beginning in June – September, each facilitated by a working group area.

GLASSNET’s first biannual meeting will take place in-person on October 11-12, 2021 at Purdue University. The team will take a deep dive into the network’s timeline where they will map out activities for the next two years and solicit input from the GLASSNET Stakeholder Advisory Board.
