Early Career Researchers Scholar Exchanges
One and two-week scholar exchanges will enable pre-tenure, U.S.- based researchers to collaborate with network members in the U.S., Brazil, China, Germany, Austria, and Italy. Scholar trips and exchanges will allow early-career scholars to gain exposure and deepen global partnerships. These exchanges will encompass sending pairs of collaborators to major, cross-disciplinary international conferences to present their work and maximize professional development opportunities. Scholars will create reports to share their experience with the interdisciplinary/international immersion to enable continued collaboration and mentorship between the Early Career Scholars and their international GLASSNET hosts and mentors.
Debborah Leip - Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research
May 22 - 31, 2024
Debborah is a Ph.D. student at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research in Germany, where she is part of the Land-Use Management working group. Her team focuses on developing and applying the agro-economic partial equilibrium model MAgPIE (Model of Agricultural Production and its Impact on the Environment). Her own research centers on "Agricultural Employment in a Sustainable Transformation of the Global Food System". In this context, she have implemented an initial representation of agricultural labor demand into MAgPIE, which she plans to improve further.
Debborah's thoughts on her recent visit to Purdue and how working with GLASSNET benefited her research:
Although SIMPLE-G uses a different modelling approach than MAgPIE, many of the covered topics and underlying challenges in the modeling are related. During my stay with the GLASSNET group, I aimed to enhance my understanding of the SIMPLE-G model, exchange insights on issues when modelling agricultural labor, and engage in discussions about ongoing and planned research concerning agricultural labor dynamics.
By presenting my work in the GLASSNET lab meeting I received valuable feedback on her current approach with MAgPIE. Especially pitching potential future development steps and getting different perspectives on their relevance and how they could be implemented — both within the lab meeting and in several follow-up discussions — has provided significant input to my ongoing research.
Felicitas Beier - Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research
September 1- October 4, 2023
Goals for the Exchange
During her two weeks research visit at Purdue University, Felicitas plans to learn more about the SIMPLE model and its gridded version SIMPLE-G. She would like to explore possibilities to derive irrigation water and irrigated land elasticities using the irrigation potentials data generated with mrwater to be used as input in SIMPLE with a focus on surface water availability. To this end, she will work together with Iman Haqiqi and other members of Tom Hertel’s group to integrate mrwater and SIMPLE in a local to global to local manner.
Opportunities for Graduate and Undergraduate Students
We will pilot undergraduate projects in collaboration with Purdue’s innovative Data Mine Learning Community. GLASSNET will provide cross-disciplinary and internationally engaged projects for Data Mine participation, and students will be able to publish data and online tools on GeoHub and cite in their resume as part of their career development.
