DURI Spring 2019 Internship Opportunities

We are excited to announce that we will offer two DURI Track 1 internship opportunities in Spring 2019, which are intended to investigate problems in the strategic areas of global security, health and sustainability.

DURI, the Discovery Park Undergraduate Research Internship program, provides exposure for Purdue undergraduate students to cutting-edge research and offer the opportunity to work directly with Purdue researchers. The program offers a hands-on, interactive environment for students to engage in interdisciplinary research projects while investigating problems in a diverse set of disciplines.

The first internship, "GeoEDF: Extensible Geospatial Data Framework towards FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) Science,” will offer an undergraduate student an opportunity to participate in a large National Science Foundation-supported project that works with researchers to utilize large scientific datasets in multiple science domains, including urban resilience, sustainable agriculture and water resources. This project is a collaboration among faculty in sustainability and resilience research from civil engineering, agricultural biological engineering, agricultural economics and environmental research, in addition to computer science. The student will work with faculty and scientists in Civil Engineering (Dr. Venkatesh Merwade), Agricultural & Biological Engineering (Dr. Jian Jin), Agricultural Economics (Dr. Uris Baldos), water resources research (Dr. Jack Smith), and Research Computing (Drs. Carol Song and Rajesh Kalyanam). To learn more about the GeoEDF project, visit: https://mygeohub.org/groups/gabbs/

A detailed description of the internship duties and instructions for applying can be found here.

The second of our internships will offer an undergraduate student the opportunity to work on the "Big Idea Challenge in Global Food-Water-Energy Sustainability Research" project. This project is part of the Big Idea initiative supported by Purdue Discovery Park that works to understand and provide solutions to challenges in global food-water-energy sustainability. The student will design and implement software to enable researchers and stakeholders to study long run sustainability issues in the global food-water-environment nexus using online gridded ag-economic modeling tools. Specific responsibilities include enhancing an online modeling tool called SIMPLE-G in the areas related to model management, data visualization, and computation on high performance computing resources. The student will work with an interdisciplinary team, including faculty and scientists in Agricultural Economics (Drs. Thomas Hertel, Jing Liu), Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences (Dr. Matthew Huber), Agronomy (Dr. Laura Bowling), Industrial Engineering and Political Science (Dr. David Johnson), and Research Computing (Dr. Carol Song and Lan Zhao). The deadline to apply for both of these internship opportunities is currently December 14, 2018.
