How We Communicate Effectively

Consider the capacity that we have humans to communicate. As social beings that we are, we relate to others through language and signs that sometimes are able to replace the verbal statements, but do we can get to interpret mental representations that another person wants to transmit?

Confusion and double interpretations are present on a daily basis and, therefore, we must seek more operational and relevant strategies to communicate effectively with others.

Given that communication skills are essential in our relationships and our academic and professional development, we must learn to effectively communicate to be attractive and get to make a good impression. Because, as we all know, the first impression is that it counts, also for businesses, who have to make use of their skills of marketing when it comes to position itself in prime locations and be competitive.

In this brief article we will translate the components that comprise the communicative activity in its broad sense, according to the approaches of the researcher in Linguistics and Pragmatics of the UNED.

The issuer intends to communicative and ostensible, i.e. a set of mental representations that wants to convey. Taking into account other visible representations (information known of the recipient, the communicative situation, media, linguistic knowledge and other related extra linguistic knowledge), and according to the information that has been able to collect, select the type of signal that seems most appropriate to achieve their goals, that is usually transmitted through linguistic means. Moreover, the recipient submits the received signal to a dual processing: linguistic decoding and inferential interpretation that if communication is effective, it creates a mental representation similar to that wanted initially to convey the issuer.

Thanks to this process, humans are constantly encoding and decoding (almost) automatically. How can success in communication? We know that many of the mental representations that we want to convey are shared between sender and recipient, and this information can be interpreted through the knowledge of the context and the communicative situation.

Communication can be described, therefore, as the process in which one (or more) individual (s) is (n) result and create certain representations in the mind of another (s). And no, it is not magic. It is a complex mental process that we are all able to develop more or less effectively. Already in the ancient Greece, with the oratory were practiced oral skills as a primary tool in the life of the man.

How many marketing campaigns have failed by not communicate effectively!
